Aragorn: Are you frightened?
Frodo: Yes.
Aragorn: Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you.
Frodo: What do you want?
Aragorn: A little more caution from you, that is no trinket you carry.
Frodo: I carry nothing.
Aragorn: Indeed. I can avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear entirely, that is a rare gift.
Frodo: No one knows it's here. Do they? Do they, Gandalf?
Galadriel: I know what it is you saw, for it is also in my mind.
[telepathically]
Galadriel: It is what will come to pass, If you should fail. The Fellowship is breaking, it has already begun. He will try to take the Ring, you kknow of whom I speak. One by one, it will destroy them.
Frodo: [telepathically] If you ask it of me, I will give you the One Ring.
Galadriel: You offer it to me freely? I do not deny that my heart has greatly desired this.
[Starts to grow dark]
Galadriel: In the place of a Dark Lord you would have a Queen! Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the Morn! Treacherous as the Seas! Stronger than the foundations of the Earth! All shall love me and despair!
[she stops]
Galadriel: I have passed the test. I will deminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.
Frodo: I cannot do this alone.
Galadriel: You are a Ring-bearer, Frodo. To bear a Ring of Power is to be alone.
[pulls out her hand]
Galadriel: This is Nenya, the Ring of Adament. And I am it's keeper. This task was appointed to you, and if you do not find a way, no one will.
Frodo: I know what I must do, it's just that... I'm afraid to do it.
Galadriel: Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.
Frodo: Go back, Sam. I'm going to Mordor alone.
Sam: Of course you are. And I'm coming with you.
Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
Frodo: You're late.
Gandalf: A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.
Gandalf: For sixty years, the Ring lay quiet in Bilbo's keeping, prolonging his life, delaying old age. But no longer, Frodo. Evil is stirring in Mordor. The Ring has awoken. It's heard its Master's call.
Frodo: But he was destroyed. Sauron was destroyed.
Gandalf: No, Frodo. The spirit of Sauron endured. His life force is bound to the Ring and the Ring survived. Sauron has returned. His Orcs have multiplied. His fortress of Barad-Dur is rebuilt in the land of Mordor. Sauron needs only this Ring to cover all the lands with a second darkness. He is seeking it, seeking it, all his thought is bent on it. The Ring yearns to go home, to return to the hand of its Master. They are one, the Ring and the Dark Lord. Frodo, he must never find it.
Frodo: We're friends of Gandalf the Grey, can you tell him we've arrived?
Barliman Butterbur: Gandalf... Gandalf... Oh, yeah, I remember elderly chap, big gray beard, point hat. Not seen him for six months.
Sam: This is it.
Frodo: This is what?
Sam: If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been.
Frodo: Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."
Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.
Frodo: I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart.
[Frodo wanders in the woods. Boromir comes up behind him.]
Boromir: None of us should wander alone, you least of all. Frodo? I know you suffer, I see it day by day. Are you sure you do not suffer needlessly? There are other ways Frodo, other paths we might take.
Frodo: I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart.
Boromir: Warning? Against what? We are all afraid Frodo. But to let that fear drive us to hide away... don't you see? It is madness.
Frodo: There is no other way.
Boromir: [moving towards Frodo] If you could but lend me the Ring...
Frodo: No!
Boromir: Why do you recoil? I am no theif.
Frodo: You are not yourself.
Frodo: What news of the outside world? Tell me everything.
Gandalf: Everything? You are far too eager and curious for a hobbit. Most unnatural.
Frodo: Before you came along, we Bagginses were very well thought of.
Gandalf: Indeed?
Frodo: Never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.
Gandalf: If you're referring to the incident with the Dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door.
Frodo: Whatever you did, you've been officially labeled a disturber of the peace.
Frodo: Where are you taking us?
Aragorn: Into the wild.
Aragorn: I swore to protect you.
Frodo: Can you protect me from yourself?
[holding out the Ring]
Frodo: Would you destroy it?
Aragorn: [closing Frodo's hand around the Ring] I would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor.
[Holding the Ring out to Frodo]
Gandalf: Hold out your hand, Frodo. Its quite cool I assure you.
[Drops the Ring into Frodo's palm]
Gandalf: What do you see?
Frodo: Nothing. Wait. There are markings. Its some form of Elvish, I can't read it.
Gandalf: There are few who can. The language is the that of Mordor, which I will not utter here.
Frodo: Mordor.
Gandalf: In the common tongue it reads "One Ring to Rule Them All. One Ring to Find Them. One Ring to Bring Them All and In The Darkness Bind Them."
[While the Men, Elves, Dwarves and Wizards argue about who is to be Ringbearer, ignoring Frodo]
Frodo: I will take it. I will take the Ring to Mordor...
[Everyone falls silent]
Frodo: ...though I do not know the way.
[Outside the gates of Moria]
Frodo: It's a riddle. What's the Elvish word for friend?
Gandalf: Mellon.
[The gates open]
Frodo: Come on Sam... Remember what Bilbo used to say: It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to...
[last line]
Frodo: Sam, I'm glad you're with me.
Gandalf: Let the ring-bearer decide.
Frodo: We will go through the mines of Moria.
Gandalf: So be it.
[After Gandalf tells Frodo about Gollum.]
Frodo: Shire? Baggins? But that would lead them here.
[Cuts to a Ringwraith cutting off a Hobbit's head]
Frodo: Here.
Gandalf: No.
Frodo: Gandalf you must take it.
Gandalf: You cannot offer me this ring.
Frodo: I'm giving it to you.
Gandalf: Don't tempt me Frodo. Understand that I would use this Ring from a desire to do good. But through me... it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.
Frodo: Mordor, Gandalf, is it left or right?
Gandalf: Left.
- Elijah Wood dressed up in breeches and a flowing shirt and went out into the hills to shoot his audition tape. His friend George Huang, directed the video.
- When Frodo falls on the snow and loses the ring, a close-up of the ring with Frodo in the background is shown. In order to keep both the subjects focused, a giant ring (6 inches of diameter) was used.
- Peter Jackson's original plan was to exclusively hire British actors for the roles of the hobbits. As it turned out, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan were the only ones, and one of the tasks he charged them with was to coach Elijah Wood and Sean Astin in the ways of British pub culture.Galadriel's opening narration was originally supposed to be provided by Frodo.
- Revealing mistakes: As Frodo runs from the orcs, his cape is clearly supported by a string to make it look flowing.
- Continuity: While the four hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin) are at The Prancing Pony in Bree, Merry returns from the bar with a pint and Pippin takes off to get his own. When the angle changes to an over-head shot, Merry is no longer at the table and Pippin is suddenly back in place. This was obviously a shot that carried over from the previous scene (prior to Merry's return from the bar).
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the dwarf mine, when Gandalf sits outside the three doorways and talks to Frodo, Frodo's close-ups are taken from reaction shots to Gandalf's speech so that we see Gandalf's beard moving as if he was talking, even though no sound is heard.
- Continuity: Throughout the movie, Frodo's fingernails are very bitten down and short, but a close-up when the Black Rider tries to sniff him out shows neatly manicured nails.
- Continuity: In the Extended Edition, Sam and Frodo change places between shots when they see the Wood Elves leaving.
- Continuity: When Frodo crouches back from the Ringwraiths on Weathertop, the Ringwraith closest to him has a sword in his right and a knife in his left hand. After Frodo puts on the Ring, the Ringwraith's left Hand can be seen - but the knife is gone
- Audio/visual unsynchronized: When the troll grabs Frodo by the leg, Frodo calls for Aragon but his lips don't match what he's saying.
- Continuity: When the four Hobbits enter the Prancing Pony, there's a book on the counter with nothing on it. In the following shot, there is a feather lying on the book and a little bottle of ink next to it.
- Continuity: As Frodo catches a ride on Gandalf's cart through the Shire, in close-ups, sunlight is brightly shining on Frodo's face from the right, but in close-ups of Gandalf sitting beside him, the sunlight is coming from above and left.
- Continuity: In the beginning of the movie when Bilbo is calling to Frodo the movie cuts to Frodo reading a book under a tree. Frodo then hears Gandalf coming and runs to him. The book Frodo was reading has vanished by the time he got to Gandalf.
- Continuity: In Moria when Frodo is stabbed be the cave troll he is stabbed in the stomach, when he falls the spear is clearly through his left armpit and when he sits back up, the hole in his shirt is near his right shoulder.
