He was in the blockbuster Deep Impact, the master-piece The Ice Storm and
played opposite Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner and Bruce Willis. He just turned
18, but as an actor he's already come to his decennial lustrum. Elijah Wood
dropped in on Amsterdam to promote his new movie "The Faculty".
Did you have a nice brithday party?
"It was my first suprise party. Terrific. My best friends ordered my
favorite food. And that is a barbecue from Austin, Texas, where we shot the
Faculty. There's this place where you can order spare ribs and send them to
LA by air mail. You just have to heat it up..."
Casey, your character in The Faculty is just as in Deep Impact and The Ice
Storm a nerd. Are you an outcast in real life?
(long break) "I don't feel at ease when I'm around people my age. Most of
the time I can get along with adults a lot better. It figures, because I've
been working with adults ever since I was eight years old. I'm interested in
other things than people of my age. If I went to highschool, just like Casey
-- I always got tutored on the set -- I'd probably be a loner as well. Or
maybe I would have chosen for that. A voluntary outcast."
Nothing in common with people your age? What about your collection of Star
Wars action figures?
"I'm a Star Wars fan. That new battle-droid: extremely cool! I'm trying to
keep up with the merchandise flood, but it's not that easy. They come out
really fast. But I'm trying."
Is there a film coming that's going to deliver an Elijah Wood action figure?
"Not in the near future, no. It would be fun, though, a figure of me next to
Luke Skywalker. I'd do anything to play in one of the new Star Wars
episodes. It seems that Annakin Skywalker will be a couple of years older in
the next films, so who knows..."
In The Good Son you co-starred next to Macaulay Culkin. Why did he fail and
did you succeed?
"I mainly played in movies for grown-ups. Macaulay on the contrary, starred
in kid's movies. That's the only thing he did: kid's movies. It's hard to
outgrow the status of kid star. He had the disadvantage of becoming famous
real fast. With me, it was going gradual, with every film a little bit more.
And I guess he had a lot of family problems at that time. You do need a lot
of luck anyway. Because no-one knows if a movie works, or how it works."
Which character of South Park would you like to be most?
"Cartman! Eric Cartman rules!"
What movie did you think was worse: Deep Impact or Armageddon?
"I haven't seen Armageddon. Some people say Deep Impact was the best. But
other friends say that about Armageddon."
What's the worst movie of all times?
"Godzilla. Godzilla sucks in every way."
